POSITION TITLE: Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCO)
(in addition to classroom teaching responsibilities - IB and bilingual context)
REPORTS TO: IB Programme Coordinator / Head of Academic Division / Inclusion Lead
Working location: Hanoi
REQUIREMENTS:
Essential:
- Hold a degree in Education or Special Education
- PGCE/QTS or equivalent
- Experience with IB curriculum or inquiry-based approaches
- At least 2 years experience in bilingual/international schools
- Knowledge of safeguarding and learning support principles
Desirable:
- Postgraduate certificate in SEN or inclusive education
- Experience in bilingual (Vietnamese -English) school settings
- Training in cognitive or behavioural assessment tools
- Familiarity with WIDA, MAP, CIS application, or similar progress frameworks.

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The SENCO is responsible for the strategic leadership and operational coordination of provision for students with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND), ensuring that all learners, including those in bilingual and multilingual contexts, have equitable access to high-quality, inquiry-based IB education. The postholder will collaborate with teachers, parents, external agencies, and school leaders while maintaining classroom teaching responsibilities.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Strategic Leadership & Compliance
- Implement and review the school’s inclusion and SEN policies in alignment with CIS and IB Standards.
- Ensure documentation complies with international safeguarding frameworks and the IB Programme Standards.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of the school's Strategic Inclusion Plan.
2. Identification and Assessment
- Lead early identification through data analysis, observation, and diagnostic tools across both English and Vietnamese streams.
- Coordinate Individual Education Plans (IEPs) with measurable goals and monitor student progress.
- Use both Vietnamese and English assessment sources to guide support planning.
3. Teacher Collaboration and Professional Learning
- Support bilingual and IB educators in differentiating instruction using inquiry-based strategies.
- Deliver workshops on inclusive practice, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), and language-accessible interventions.
- Model inclusion through co-teaching and observation cycles.
Student and Parent Support
- Maintain regular communication with families in Vietnamese and/or English.
- Coordinate review meetings involving teachers, families, and specialists.
- Liaise with bilingual support services (speech/language, counselling) when appropriate.
4. Dual Role: Teaching
- Teach classes aligned with the IB curriculum, incorporating inclusive and student-centred pedagogies.
- Adapt content for learners with diverse needs, especially in a dual-language context.
- Contribute to collaborative planning meetings to model integrated SEN support.
