Vietnam is one of the fasted growing countries in Asia, it is in the midst of a“golden” population boom,: over half of the 90 million people in Vietnam were born after the 1970s. This young generation has an enormous demand for learning English, resulting in many opportunities for foreign teachers, who would like to have a stable position in the Vietnamese working market.
Nowadays, there are many private schools in Vietnam, maybe up to 200 in Ho Chi Minh city alone. Vietnam has become a preferred destination for many foreign teachers because of the many benefits, i.e, well-paid, professional working and sociable environments, most schools will not give teachers as many hours as they would like, so they will have flexible schedules. Working in private schools only requires some simple documents, as well as qualifications. Sometimes with just a TESOL and 1 year’s experience, a Native English teacher can find a very good position.
English is the most common second language taught in Vietnam, so the Native English teacher’s job has more advantages than other teaching jobs. However, other languages such as Chinese, Japanese, Korean, French,… are becoming more popular, which give native speakers more chances.
As a Native English teacher, you can choose the perfect city to teach and reside in. Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh city are the two biggest cities, with many teaching jobs, but many other smaller cities, such as: Vung tau, Da nang, Hai phong,, etc, will give you a nice feeling when you teach there, plus accommodation , ( if not supplied ), and living expenses, are often much cheaper
Work visas in Vietnam are not a problem. Tourist visas can be converted to work visas without leaving the country. Transportation comes in many forms: public or private. But if you want to live as a resident, you should buy a motorbike, ( make sure you have a licence ), The food in Vietnam is healthy, delicious and cheap.
