PURPOSE OF THE ROLE
The Secondary and High School ESL Teacher supports students in developing the English language skills required to access the wider curriculum and function confidently in an English-speaking learning environment. The role focuses on improving accuracy, fluency, comprehension, and communication so that students can participate effectively across subjects and school life.
Teaching and Learning
- Plan and deliver structured ESL lessons appropriate to Secondary and High School students’ language levels
- Develop students’ reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills
- Build academic vocabulary and functional classroom language
- Differentiate instruction to meet a wide range of proficiency levels
- Monitor student progress through regular formative and summative assessment
- Provide clear feedback to support language improvement
- Support students’ confidence in using English independently
- Embed practical communication skills relevant to real academic contexts
Curriculum Development and Collaboration
- Work with subject teachers to identify language challenges affecting learning
- Support adaptation of classroom materials for ESL learners where needed
- Promote consistent expectations for English use across lessons
- Contribute to whole-school literacy and language initiatives
Professional Development and School Community Involvement
- Participate in staff meetings and professional development
- Maintain accurate records of student progress
- Communicate clearly with parents about language development
- Contribute positively to the wider school community
