I have experienced teaching both public and private school here in the Philippines.
When I was in AMA Computer Learning Center, I taught Communication, English and Literature to college students and at the same time, I was also teaching English to senior high school students. Students between college department and senior high school department are different in terms of attitude and behavior. Most of the college students are hard headed but I was able to manage them. Senior high students are agressive and eager to learn, so they are always participative.
When my 1 year contract ended, I applied in the Department of Education to teach English to senior high school students in public school. Luckily I was hired as a contractual teacher. There, I have experienced teaching the poorest from the poor students. I have learned so much about life when I was there.
Meanwhile, after my contract, I need to level up, and so I applied as an English communication trainer to one of the private international company based in the Philippines. I train new hires in American and British English to equip them the best communication skills needed for thier job.
One significant learning I have learned from my previous experiences, which is also my teaching philosopy is, "your students will never learn they don't like you as a teacher". It is true. As a teacher, you always need to have their attention to you. So how did I do it for my students to like me? The charisma and interpersonal skills I got from my experiences. That's the difference between communication graudate and English major graduate. We were trained on how to deal with the public, not just by teaching the language. That's all.
