I graduated with a Master of Arts degree in Psychology, with particular focus on child development and early learning. I am familiar with different concepts and theories related to how we learn and how the brain develops in early learning. My degree has been of great benefit to me as I try to apply much of what I learned to my own teaching style. I strive to be dynamic and adaptable and create a classroom atmosphere that is warm and accommodating for all students.
Upon leaving university I worked at a local college supporting students with additional learning needs. Here I was able to learn different classroom methodologies from experienced educators. It was particularly advantageous as it helped me to understand how to manage a full classroom while attending to the particular needs of an individual. This has been instrumental to helping me teach students of all different levels and abilities and in understanding some of the barriers students face. I also think it has made me a very patient and understanding teacher.
I then began my ESL journey in Spain, where I was a cultural and language assistant at a bilingual state school. I taught students from 4-12 years old with an average class size of around 30 students. I thoroughly enjoyed teaching the young learners, using a lot of songs, games and play-based learning to ensure that their first introduction to English was always fun and engaging. I also prepared the older students for their Cambridge PET and KET exams. I am comfortable with all areas but my assigned role was in coaching the children for the speaking part of the assessment. My students went on to gain the highest mark in the region for this part of the exam. Successes like this make me feel immeasurably proud of my students and very satisfied in my job.
Having completed my contract in Spain, I then began teaching at a kindergarten/elementary private school in Seoul, South Korea. I spent most of my time with the kindergarten students, many of whom were being exposed to English for the first time. I worked with the same students throughout this year and it was so rewarding to watch them progress and develop their English skills. As well as teaching in the classroom, I also coordinated the performances for school shows as well as writing and preparing speeches for national speech contests, with several of my students achieving top awards.
In addition to working in schools, I also have experience teaching online and private tutoring. I have organised my schedule for both, ensuring that I am both reliable and flexible in my availability and coaching all of my students on their individual needs. I strive to make my lessons both educational and fun to ensure that learning English is something my students look forward to and feel enthusiastic about. It has given me great experience in creating and managing my own schedule and navigating new cities.
