While at university I studied Film and Documentary studies. My studies were a mix of academic and practical course work, I had to write, shoot and produce our own short films and documentaries. As well as this I also wrote about critical theory in film, from feminism in film to Hollywood and international cinema, I also had to produce and end of year dissertation where I chose to discuss British social realism. My studies also showed me a wide range of cinema from around the world which helped give me a taste for cultural exchanges and an appreciation of alternatives world views. Studying film helped me develop my ability at public speaking and class presentation as well as making me a concise and articulate director, skills which I think translate very naturally into an ESL classroom.
August 2014 – Teacher at Cleverlearn, Hanoi August 2015 While at Cleverlearn I taught a range of different age groups and abilities, from young pre-schoolers up to intermediate-level teenagers. I thoroughly enjoyed helping my students progress and gain new language skills, while maintaining an interactive and fun classroom. What I learned from this experience was that building a good rapport was essential, so that my students looked forward to attending each lesson.
January 2015 Private Tuition, Hanoi While working in Vietnam I also taught as a private tutor. These were small but intensive classes conducted at one of the students’ family home. I designed my own curriculum for the classes and enjoyed gaining experience in a different teaching environment.
May 2014 - Teacher at Upon English Centre, Hanoi August 2015 Working in Upon was my first EFL teaching experience and I realised quickly that it was my ideal job. Creating a relaxed yet focused classroom environment meant that my student’s confidence and ability rose rapidly. I taught mostly 8-12 year olds, with one advance teenager class which was an absolute delight to teach.
