I have a BA in cultural anthropology from Bates College, a prestigious university in the USA. I also have a 120 hour TEFL certificate from i-to-i.
I spent one full year working as a substitute school teacher in the public school system in Lewiston, Maine. As a substitute school teacher, I lead and taught classes of every subject type and all grade levels. The school system in which I taught was primarily immigrant students who did not speak native English, so I had the opportunity to work closely with these students in developing their English language skills. Through this experience I learned that I am well suited for teaching. I can keep a class focused and interested, and can explain concepts to students of all learning types.
In addition to this classroom teaching experience, I have held a number of other jobs that involved teaching and instructing. While in college I spent six months working for a language school in Guatamala, where I lead trips for language school students of all ages to a nearby Mayan community and taught them how to build stoves. I have also spent two summers working as a camp counselor for young boys.
